Engineering Technology
The Polk State Associate in Science in Engineering Technology Program can provide a pathway to many high-skill, high-wage careers in modern manufacturing. Engineering Technology is the perfect profession for those who enjoy problem solving and innovating using new technologies, as well as those who just like to know how things work. Engineering Technology combines imagination, ingenuity, and skills with incorporation of the latest technologies to produce better products and solutions.
The Polk State College two-year Associate of Science (AS) in Engineering Technology (ET) degree program prepares individuals for employment and provides additional training in advanced manufacturing and high-technology industries. The degree offers the opportunity to specialize in Advanced Manufacturing or Mechanical Design and Fabrication. The Advanced Manufacturing specialization focuses on programmable logic controllers (PLCs), robotics, and automation. The Mechanical Design and Fabrication specialization focuses on 3D-modeling technology, as well as computer numerical control (CNC) machining and programming skillsets.
Because manufacturing is so diverse, there are extensive opportunities for people of all technical backgrounds to build challenging and rewarding careers. With approximately 16,500 manufacturers in Florida, the employment opportunities for graduates in this field are numerous and widespread. Manufacturing jobs pay up to 20 percent more than the Florida average annual wage (i.e., average starting wage of $44,000).
A Polk State AS in Engineering Technology degree is fully transferable to a four-year degree-granting institution. The Program is offered in a hybrid format with direct assessment, combining theory-based knowledge development with lab assignments to allow for application of information and skills. This format is responsive to both student and industry needs, supporting individuals who are participating in the workforce while obtaining higher education and training for superior productivity and innovation within local companies.
Instructional Design and Delivery
The hybrid instructional delivery of the Engineering Technology Program provides small theory-based learning modules that are provided online, followed by hands‐on labs and assessments. In combination, this offers flexibility for the participant. The individual studies lecture materials from home at his or her convenience and then self-schedules time in the laboratory to complete active hands-on assignments and assessments (within a limited time frame to ensure timely progression). This format develops independency, discipline, critical-thinking abilities, and problem-solving skills that are necessary for success and sought by employers, enabling job-ready graduates to excel in their chosen fields.
